During Term 2, the children of Years 5 and 6 have been investigating the effects of human migration to Australia. Part of their learning was reading migration biographies and interviewing some of our own class parents who migrated to Australia. The children have used our own communities’ migration stories to plan and write picture book biographies, using the stone art work of Nizar Ali Badr as inspiration. Nizar Ali Badr is a famous Syrian artist that uses the stones that he finds on his walks along the seashore near the ancient Syrian port city of Ugarit to create artworks. The children explored his work while reading a story about a Syrian refugee family in the book Stepping Stones by Margriet Ruurs.
